Spotify CEO Daniel Ek had recently said that the company was working on enhancing the free user experience.
Spotify has reversed its decision to restrict lyrics access for free users, according to recent reports. Earlier this year, the Swedish music streaming company had imposed a limit on free account holders, allowing them to view lyrics for only three songs per month, while paid subscribers could access lyrics without restrictions. This policy, which was initially introduced as a test last fall and expanded in May, faced considerable backlash and criticism from users.
Lyrics Access Restored for Free Spotify Users
Spotify has announced that it will gradually remove restrictions on lyrics access for free users over the coming weeks, according to an Engadget report. A Spotify representative mentioned that the platform "constantly evaluates and adjusts its features" across various subscription tiers, markets, and devices. This upcoming change will allow all users, regardless of their subscription status, to view lyrics for any song without limitations.

This decision aligns with recent comments from Spotify CEO Daniel Ek, who during an earnings call hinted at efforts to enhance the experience for free users, with improvements expected soon. Restoring unrestricted lyrics access appears to be a part of this initiative.
Initially, limiting lyrics access for non-paying users was perceived as a strategy to encourage upgrades to paid subscriptions, which start at $11 per month. However, negative feedback seems to have led Spotify to reconsider its approach to differentiating between free and premium services.
As Spotify continues to refine its offerings, users can anticipate additional updates to both free and paid tiers in the near future. The company's focus on enhancing the free experience suggests a strategy to retain a large user base while still providing incentives for premium subscriptions.

In the meantime, Spotify has launched a special promotion in India, offering a significant discount on its premium service. For a limited time, select subscribers in India can access Spotify’s premium features for just Rs 59 for three months. This exclusive offer ends on August 25, giving interested users a short window to take advantage of the reduced price. This promotion is currently available only in India.
